Behind the curtain: Inside KU Theatre auditions

Earlier this week, students stepped into the spotlight to audition for next year’s KU Theatre productions.
For many students, audition day is equal parts excitement and nerves as they prepare to wow their audience: the directing team. Some students have years of experience in the live performance field, while others have none.
“Anyone that shows up, it’s an act of courage just to show up and perform in front of people you don’t know, it’s scary,” said KU Theatre and Dance Artistic Director Markus Potter.
Students were asked to prepare a 30-second song clip and a shortened monologue to perform at the open call. However, even after all the preparation, students do not always land their dream role.
“I have tried out for every show I can. I think it’s important to go out for everything; you don’t want to limit yourself,” said student Essy Siegel. “It’s just are you what the directors are looking for in that moment.”
In such a competitive space, auditions are where students can prove themselves and stand out. Directors look for certain qualities that make them believe individuals can deliver when show day rolls around.
“We’re looking for people who make bold, grounded, daring choices. You know, folks that are making the character and interpreting the text for themselves, rather than a carbon copy of a carbon copy. We’re looking for that unique way that people are telling the story,” Potter said.
For some students, simply being part of a collaborative art form is an opportunity itself. Auditions are also a chance for students to build connections and gain experience.
“It’s so fulfilling in a way that you don’t always get in other parts of life. So, getting to do that with people watching and paying to see me do that is a crazy thing,” said student Olivia Carines.
Callbacks will take place on Wednesday, April 29, and Thursday, April 30, with rehearsals starting in August.
