With food prices climbing and many families struggling to keep up, local businesses and nonprofits across Lawrence are working together to make sure no one goes hungry.

Ladybird Diner, a downtown staple, has made community support part of its mission. Every Monday evening from 5 to 7 p.m., the diner offers free soup and croissants to anyone who stops by, no questions asked.

Owner Meg Heriford says food is her way of helping build a stronger Lawrence.

“If we have a small ability to contribute to the stability of our community in whatever way, and food happens to be mine, then it’s on us to help create stronger communities together,” Heriford said.

Across town, Hy-Vee is also doing its part. The store has been providing free hot meals and meal kits through local partnerships and food pantries, giving back to the community during a difficult time.

Keegan Russel, an employee at Hy-Vee, says the response has been overwhelmingly positive.

“It’s very gratifying for our staff and for our company to be able to give back to the community in any way possible,” Russel said. “The community’s been very grateful for it we’ve had a lot of great feedback.”

Local organizations like the Salvation Army, Trinity Interfaith Pantry and ECKAN Food Bank are also playing key roles in fighting food insecurity, ensuring that everyone in Lawrence has access to a decent meal.

As the impact of losing SNAP benefits continues to affect families, these efforts are helping fill the gap and strengthen community ties.

From diners to grocery stores and nonprofits, Lawrence is coming together to make sure no one goes hungry.
