The Lawrence Humane Society (LHS) had its annual “Clear the Shelter” day last weekend, to match animals with a forever home. This year, 131 furry friends were adopted, 60 dogs and 71 cats; additionally, the shelter waived its fees for 13 dogs.

LHS is still looking to find homes for its other animals, even if it’s not through the adoption process. Animal lovers can volunteer to foster a pet from the humane society, with all the supplies needed to care for the animal.
The shelter provides food, kennels, toys, treats, and anything else the pet foster parent might need.
One Lawrence resident, Kara Kendall-Morwick has been fostering kittens for over four years, helping over 150 kittens find homes. As a foster parent, she cares for the kittens while they are growing until they can be ready to be put up for adoption.
“Kittens are just fun to have around. It’s fun to watch them grow, they change so rapidly. They become so curious and inquisitive, it’s fun to watch them play and explore and when they are ready to go and move on to their new homes, I get to start over with a new batch of kittens,” Kendall-Morwick said.
The process even works for current pet owners, including Kendall-Morwick who has a dog and cat of her own at home.
The shelter will help place a foster animal into the home based on what works best for the animals they already have at home by providing instructions on how to introduce and integrate the animals safely.
The Lawrence Humane Society is open for adoptions every day from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; students living on-campus should check their housing’s policy on pets before adopting or fostering.
