KU Recreation Services renovates basketball courts at Ambler Rec Center, increasing size by 20%

Over the past six months, KU Recreation Services worked to renovate the six basketball courts at the Ambler Student Recreation Fitness Center. This past Christmas break allowed for the final touches to be finished, increasing size, grip and perimeter lines for each court.

Caden Letsche / KU Recreation Services renovated the six basketball courts at the Ambler Student Recreation Center this past semester.

KU Recreation Services worked to solve the common issues of players slipping around without any grip, and they also added some new designs to them as well. The project took about six months to complete. According to Associate Director of Facilities Management, Christopher Wash, all Jayhawk logos were reoriented to face South, while also increasing their size by about 20%.

They also swapped the perimeter lines from a 2-inch black line to an 8-inch blue line. This adjustment adds more color to the court and draws attention to the boundary lines. “KU Recreation Services” was also added to the center, in between all of the courts.

The final touch was updating the college three-point line to blue, and the high school three-point line to yellow. These color changes make the court more vibrant than the previous black lines.

“The courts are great. Not slippery, work well. You know, everything’s good,” freshman Michael Frankhauser said.

In the future, Wash hopes to continue utilizing the valuable resources that Recreation Services have to offer, and enhance the experience for the entire Jayhawk community.
