From yard work to home improvement projects, volunteers worked across the city, assisting residents who need help with tasks they can’t manage on their own.

Despite the rain, excitement was high for the Spring Big Event, KU’s largest day of community service, held last Saturday.

The Big Event is a day-long volunteer opportunity open to KU students, faculty and staff. The event focuses on non-needs-based service in Lawrence.

Jenna Zerr / The Big Event on Saturday organized students, staff and faculty volunteers for non-needs-based community service across Lawrence including family residences and community gardens.

Ash Wilson, a longtime Lawrence resident and seven-year Big Event house recipient said the event has helped her and her family.

“It’s been immensely helpful, saving us hours of time when we’re running after two little ones. The impact is tremendous, and it’s been a great opportunity to connect with the volunteers,” Wilson said.

The event saw 966 volunteers working on 130 job sites around Lawrence.

“The Big Event is personal,” volunteer Abby Olsen said. “It’s not just about the work, it’s about the relationships we build with the Lawrence community.”

Organized by KU students, The Big Event continues to strengthen the bond between KU and Lawrence. This annual initiative proves that, rain or shine, Jayhawks are always ready to give back.
