KU Campus Cupboard provides food and essential items for students

Many college students struggle to afford basic necessities while balancing tuition, housing, and everyday expenses. At the University of Kansas, the Campus Cupboard is working to ensure students have access to food and essential items.
According to the U.S. Government Accountability Office, about 23% of students experience food insecurity during their time in school, meaning these students may not have consistent access to enough food or may be unsure where their next meal will come from.
The Campus Cupboard aims to address that issue directly. Located in Suite 400 of the Kansas Memorial Union, the resource provides free food, toiletries, and household items to students in need.
Haylie Lancaster, Associate Director of Impact Programs and Services, says meeting basic needs is critical for student success.
“Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. At the bottom you have food, water, shelter, clothing. That is the base level to function as a person,” Lancaster said. “If you can’t meet those needs, you can’t do any of the rest of the things in the hierarchy.”
Food insecurity can lead to more than just hunger. It can also cause difficulty concentrating, mental health challenges, and brain fog.
Seri Steinbrecher says having access to food makes a noticeable difference.
“I would say I definitely do better in class and throughout the day if I’ve eaten.”
The Campus Cupboard is open Monday through Friday. They accept donations, and an Amazon wishlist is available on its website for those looking to contribute.
