KU Fashion Week draws sold-out crowd while highlighting student creativity

Models walk the runway at KU Fashion and Business Organization’s second annual KU Fashion Week at Capitol Federal Hall on April 18.

A packed audience filled Capitol Federal Hall on Saturday, April 18, as the University of Kansas Fashion and Business Organization hosted its second annual KU Fashion Week.

The student-run event showcased original collections from student designers, featuring both emerging talent and experienced participants. The show aimed to grow the presence of fashion across campus and connect students from different disciplines.

“We wanted to have more of a fashion presence at KU and bring together the journalism school, the architecture and design school and then also the business school and kind of get fashion involved in the broader campus,” FBO PR Coordinator Viola Economos said.

This year’s event included 11 student designers presenting nine collections, some of which were collaborative. The runway featured a variety of styles like crochet, grunge and Y2K, reflecting the creativity and range of student work.

For designer Hayes Courtney, seeing her work showcased on the runway is the most rewarding part of the process.

“That’s my favorite part is just watching these models walk in them and seeing how it flows and drapes on a body,” Courtney said. “Also, love the audience. Like I love watching their reactions.”

Models also emphasized the importance of the event as a platform for student expression.

“I think it’s cool to see students who are more new to this having a place to just show off their work,” model Savannah Perea said.

As KU Fashion Week continues to expand, organizers hope the event encourages more students to participate and explore the opportunities that FBO brings.

“We’ve been really supported by the business school, by the dean, by other clubs and just the administration in general, but I would love to see people get more involved,” Economos said.
