KU Opera opens production of L’Elisir D’Amore

Romance, comedy, and just a little bit of magic took over the stage as KU Opera opened its latest production of L’Elisir D’Amore, also known as The Elixir of Love, on February 19, 20, 22, and 24 at Crafton-Preyer Theatre inside Murphy Hall.
At the heart of the opera’s story is a simple but relatable question: If you could take one magical drink to fix your problems, would you? With music by Gaetano Donizetti and a libretto (script) by Felice Romani, the show is sung in Italian and blends humor, romance, and playful chaos into one fun, fast-moving performance.
But while the story may feel light and charming, the work behind it is anything but easy. Cast member Yanjun Chen, who plays the leading lady, Adina, shared that one of the biggest challenges is “singing while dancing together with body support.”
The production is directed by Stella Markou and conducted by Boris Vayner, featuring student performers backed by a full creative team handling sets, costumes, and lighting. From the colorful staging to the lively music, the show creates an atmosphere that feels welcoming whether you’re an opera expert or stepping into the theatre for the first time.
For Bing Jiang, the leading man, one of the standout moments comes during a comedic “drunk” scene, a fun time to sing and a reminder that opera doesn’t always have to be serious to be impressive. And KU Opera isn’t done yet. With opera workshops coming up on May 2, 3, and 4, students and community members will have the chance to get involved, gain hands-on experience, and continue building their skills.
