Lawrence Farmers Market opens for 2025 season

The Lawrence Farmer’s Market kicked off its 2025 season on Saturday, bringing locally grown produce, handmade goods and a strong sense of community to downtown Lawrence.

Founded in 1976, the market has grown from just three farmers selling vegetables out of their trucks to more than 65 local vendors. Each seller comes from within 50 miles of Lawrence, making it the oldest producer-only market in Kansas.

The market runs as a nonprofit, requiring that all items are grown, raised or made by the vendors themselves. This commitment supports small farms, reduces carbon emissions and fosters face-to-face connections between buyers and producers.

“Everything here, people grew themselves, and that is totally a wonderful thing,” vendor Margret Kramer said.

That authenticity is what continues to draw regulars back to New Hampshire Street each weekend.

“I wish that everybody would shop at their local farmer’s market,” Kramer said. “Because when they shop locally, they’re really lowering their carbon footprint. You get to know people, you can ask people face-to-face ‘how did you grow this? What is this?’”

Vendor Julie Pennington said community relationships extend far beyond the stands.

“I’ve made friends even in the short time I’ve been here with the other vendors, as well as the people that come here to shop,” Pennington said.

The Lawrence Farmers Market is still searching for a permanent home, but every Saturday morning, it turns New Hampshire Street into a place of connection and sustainability.

The market is open from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. every Saturday through November at 824 New Hampshire Street. For more information on vendors and upcoming events, visit lawrencefarmersmarket.org.
