Lawrence middle schoolers visit the KUJH studio to learn about broadcast journalism

Seventh and eighth graders from the Liberty Memorial Central Middle School Intertribal Club, a club for Native students, took a field trip to the journalism school this Tuesday to learn about broadcast journalism.
They visited the KUJH broadcast studio during the JMC 620: TV News-Advanced Media class and shadowed student reporters as they ran through the steps of producing a live news show.
Executive producer Jaden Huehl said the experience was just as fulfilling for the KUJH journalists as it was for the middle schoolers.
“It was so much fun to be able to have young journalists come into our space and talk about the work that we’re doing, and even more exciting the work that they’re wanting to do in their future,” she said. “It’s just a really cool way to collaborate with our community.”
The middle school students split into groups and followed KUJH student journalists to learn about the various roles needed to put on a show. They learned how to live anchor, run the cameras and teleprompters, produce the show, and more.
Kirby Bell was one of the middle school students who got to practice being an anchor and reading a teleprompter.
“I was so excited,” he said. “I got to read the script and stuff. Like I was on television.”
