Lawrence Transit continues to improve bus stops ahead of World Cup 2026

Lawrence Transit has continued its Bus Stop Improvement Program by installing new, “more durable” bus shelters for visitors coming to Kansas City this summer for the 2026 World Cup.

There are currently 328 bus stops around Lawrence, many of which are under renovation.

“We want riders to have a really good experience on our transit system, so we try to give out as many amenities as we can,” said Lawrence Transit Director Felice Lavergne. “You’ll see improvements downtown and across the city as well as part of our ongoing bus top amenity program.”

These renovations include more shelters and seating, digital signage, and more wind protection. The improvements are designed to make travel more comfortable for both visitors and residents.

“These improvements downtown are for the World Cup,” said Lavergne. “With a lot of people, we wanted to put something durable in place so that everybody can have a safe and exciting time.”

Along with the new bus stop shelters, Lawrence Transit has its sights set on a new downtown bus station at 8th and Vermont St., with upgrades to make travel more efficient. It is expected to be completed in either 2027 or 2028.

City officials emphasized the importance of these renovations, with the World Cup bringing attention to Lawrence and creating a long-term investment for residents.
