Living next to the buzz: new duplex near KU’s bar scene sparks mixed reactions

Construction in Lawrence seems to be never-ending; the latest renovation is a brick apartment building on 14th and Tennessee Street.

This building is expected to be a hot property, sitting right next to the “Triangle,” the popular area known for KU’s three close to campus bars.

According to the construction workers, what was an old apartment building, is slated to become a duplex with ten rooms on both sides.

But what is the true reality of living near such an active nightlife? Do late nights, loud music, and intoxication every week affect the way of life?

Some tenants living near this area share their opinions.

“I personally like living next to the bar because it kinda feels like the hot spot on campus, it’s not too loud at night, and even if it is loud I just turn on my white noise on my Amazon Echo and it just overpowers any noise that the bar makes,” Alexis Mikuta, a Junior at KU who lives across from this building on Tennessee Street, said.

“The worst part is definitely the noise, my room is directly next to the bar so I definitely hear more of the noise than like the other rooms in the house,” Maggie Hanson, also a junior at KU, said.

Despite the challenges, demand for housing remains high due to KU’s growing enrollment. The new duplex already has tenants lined up for next year—before it’s even finished!
