Looking for a summer internship? Here’s how to land one with KU resources

With spring break just around the corner, many students are shifting their focus to summer internships. Experts say starting early and taking advantage of KU’s resources can make all the difference.

Internships provide hands-on experience and serve as a stepping stone to future careers, but landing the right opportunity can be difficult. KU students have access to resources like the Career Center and Alumni Association to help them stand out.

Program Director for the KU Career Center Dr. Wendy Shoemaker tells students to explore every opportunity they can.

“A lot of students feel pressure to apply immediately, but it’s important to take time to find the right fit,” Dr. Shoemaker said. “It’s never too early, and it’s never too late to apply for an internship.”

Networking with KU alumni is one of the best ways to get your foot in the door. The Alumni Association has many resources to assist in connecting with alums. Dr. Howard Graham, senior director of career and professional development at the KU Alumni Association, encourages students to reach out for more than just specific opportunities.

“It’s best in modern networking to build an authentic relationship with somebody, which can be very difficult if the first thing you ask for is an internship,” Dr. Graham said.

For KU journalism student Kara Lyons, alumni connections helped her land a dream internship in her hometown.

“I got into the interview, and they told me there were about 250 applicants. They chose seven to interview, and because I’m a student at KU, the executive producer said, ‘I don’t want to continue the process without interviewing her and seeing what she’s about,’” Lyons said.

Her experience highlights the importance of using KU’s resources and making meaningful professional connections.

“As soon as you find that connection, reach out immediately,” Lyons said. “If nothing happens and they don’t respond, at least you know you did all you could.”

Students looking to build their network and explore career opportunities can attend the KU Career and Internship Expo on March 13. KU’s journalism school will also offer its own career fair on Thursday.
