Selective Service System automatically registering young men into military draft as soon as December

New changes may soon affect how men between the ages of 18 and 26 are registered for the military draft. A recent proposal from the Selective Service Systems makes registration automatic for eligible individuals.
Under the proposed rule, men between the ages of 18 and 26 would be automatically registered for the draft beginning as soon as December 2026.
As it stands, individuals in this group are required to register themselves. The change would instead rely on government data to enroll eligible men without requiring individual action.
In an interview about the draft, political activist Edward Hasbrouck said, “the Selective Service System came up with a plan which they managed to sneak through Congress last year to give Selective Service a second chance to try to register potential draftees automatically.”
The Selective Service System maintains a database of individuals who could be called upon in the event of a military draft. Although the last military draft was conducted in 1973, the system remains in place as a contingency to rapidly expand the armed forces if needed.
Officials from the White House have emphasized that there are currently no plans to reinstate the draft itself.
“It is not part of the current plan right now but the president again wisely keeps his options on the table,” said Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt. “But as commander in chief, there’s no greater priority or responsibility to this president than of course protecting the American people.”
If the rule takes effect, those automatically registered would receive written notice along with instructions on how to contest their registration if they qualify for an exemption.
Some existing exemptions include people who are medically ineligible, ministers of religion, and certain other groups. Women are also currently exempt under federal law.
While the proposed change does not signal an imminent draft, it reflects ongoing efforts to modernize the Selective Service system. For more information about registration requirements and exemptions, visit the official Selective Service website.
