Shake Smart has officially opened inside the David A. Ambler Student Recreation Fitness Center. It brings the University of Kansas a new option for shakes, bowls and other protein-packed bites just steps away from the gym.
On Sept. 18, it hosted its grand opening. It celebrated this with free shakes for students, giving a first taste of the menu.
Shake Smart replaced a seating area that wasn’t getting much use. The space has been transformed and is now a new dining option for students whether they’re finishing a workout or just passing by.
“I love going into the workout classes,” freshman Norah Kath said. “Then coming out here to have Shake Smart and have these healthy options for you, it’s been amazing”
The addition of Shake Smart ties into KU Dining’s effort to expand healthy options across campus, with an emphasis on meeting different dietary needs.
“One of our bigger focuses, on all aspects of dining, is making more vegetarian, vegan, and overall healthy options,”Alan Schneider, the assistant director of retail dining said.
Placing Shake Smart inside the Recreational Center was also a deliberate choice, giving students easy access to nutritious options while on campus.
“It’s been a great partnership with Ambler Rec Center and it just makes so much sense with what is being offered there,” Schneider said.
For students prioritizing healthier choices on campus, Shake Smart is already making an impact.
“I definitely try to prioritize protein and fiber,” freshman Halee Horner said. “It really helps me feel better about putting nutritious food in my body.”
Shake Smart is now open on campus, giving students a convenient way to grab healthy meals and snacks on the go. For a full list of hours, visit dining.ku.edu/hours.
