Anschutz vs. Watson: How KU’s libraries differ

The University of Kansas features many different spots to study, but the most popular are the campus’ main two libraries, Anschutz and Watson. The libraries are more than just a place to study, as they offer other resources such as selections of thousands of books to check out, computer labs with printing services, recording studios, private study spaces, and more.
In addition to all these resources, many students like to go to the libraries just to meet up with friends.
“I like coming to the library to just hangout with friends after classes,” said Ibaad Khatib, a KU student. “It’s just a nice space to be, to get work done, studying.”
These main two libraries may seem alike, but they are not the same. One of the key differences between the two is that Anschutz is open 24 hours, whereas Watson is not.
The libraries also differ in terms of content available for checkout. According to Associate Dean of Libraries Kent Miller, Watson features more humanities and international collections, while Anschutz features business and science collections.
Another key difference between the two is the atmosphere.
“Watson is known as the graduate or the quiet study library,” Miller said. “Anschutz, it’s the library where there’s a lot of talking and a lot of socialization.”
These differences have resulted in some students preferring one library over the other.
“I’m an Anschutz guy,” said Aaron Garding, a student. “It’s because I’m a whiteboard guy. I love to write on all the whiteboards and Watson doesn’t have as many.”
While some have their preferences, others like both for different reasons.
“I think it depends on who I’m with,” said Hamza Siddiqui, another student. “If I’m with my friends, then I like Anschutz because I can talk to them and stuff, but if I need to lock in, then I’d definitely go to Watson”
While the libraries are different, they both offer great spaces for students on KU’s campus, no matter which library students prefer.
