Snow creates challenges for students living off campus

Winter in Lawrence brings icy streets and steep hills that make commuting difficult for many KU students living off campus.

“Kansas, or Lawrence, Kansas is very hilly, so if there’s always snow and ice on the ground it’s kinda hard to get up and down those large inclines,” said KU student Charlie Wurster.

However, the university does well when it comes to clearing areas on campus.

“They do a great job with Jayhawk Boulevard, and like just the main streets where all the classes are,” Wurster said. However, sidewalks and roads leading to campus are often left untouched.

Landlords also face added responsibilities during winter storms. Morgan Means, a local landlord, said, “I had to shovel the driveway and the sidewalks around my house.” Means also said that not all property owners are as involved as she is. “Houses on Tennessee [Street], Kentucky [Street] and those areas, I don’t think their landlord is as involved… I think it’s kind of more like ‘you guys are on your own.’”

As winter continues, students hope for better snow removal beyond campus boundaries to ensure safer travel to class.
