As Kansas football evolves, so does game day fashion

As Kansas football enters a new era, some University of Kansas students say game day fashion is shifting toward the dressed-up style often associated with Southeastern Conference football.

SEC football games are often known for fans treating game day as a social event and putting extra thought into their outfits. That influence can be seen among some KU students who use football games as an opportunity to dress up.

“The football stadium being re-branded, I think it gives more of an SEC vibe,” said senior Connor Keims. “So, I think more people will start to dress up … It brings in more people so people start to care more.”

Students and fans can be seen wearing everything from traditional KU T-shirts and jerseys to dresses, boots, denim and accessories in crimson and blue.

“For game day, I definitely want to pick something that goes with Kansas colors, so that’s why I decided to go with the red shorts,” said junior Ava Heath.

However, not every fan is trading in the traditional game-day look.

Some still choose the classic combination of a KU sweatshirt, jeans and sneakers, keeping the style casual and familiar.

“I personally love the Midwest, like the sunflower, country boots, hats, like jerseys, like that kind of stuff,” Heath said. 

The mix of styles reflects a larger question surrounding the changing identity of Kansas football: Can the Jayhawks embrace a new, more modern football culture while keeping the Midwestern traditions that have shaped game days in Lawrence?

For now, fans appear to be doing both.

Whether they arrive dressed up or keep it casual, KU fans continue to use game day fashion as another way to show their Jayhawk pride.
