Downtown Mass Street stabbing means changes to student nightlife
Students have returned for the fall semester, which means downtown Massachusetts Street is busier than ever.
However, a deadly altercation that happened close to local bars Leroy’s Tavern and Logie’s on Mass has some students concerned about going out late.
The incident happened a little before 3 a.m. on Massachusetts Street, near the breezeway between Seventh and Eighth streets.
According to KMBC, the perpetrator and the victim had been drinking at a bar where the dispute started. Police say several people were involved, but only one person, Keisonn Smith Jr., has been charged with second-degree murder. The victim, 20-year-old McMillin Tutu died in the hospital.

Some students say the incident has made them more cautious about going out downtown.
“I think especially right now, yeah, I think a lot of people are kind of turned off to the idea of going out, especially down Mass nowadays,” said KU student Will Blaisedell.
Other students say the incident has not stopped them from going out, but they are taking more precautions.
“I would say that I’m never alone, or I try not to be, especially when I’m walking back and forth between bars,” said KU student Amelia Jaeger. “I’m always with friends. I always try to have my phone charged.”
Lawrence police say they have seen an increase in activity and crime as students from KU, Haskell, Washburn and Topeka return to the area.
In response to the altercation, Lawrence police have started their fall initiative: adding officers on foot downtown from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.
“Kind of helps to just have that increased presence. So, especially if they have questions, if they have concerns, hopefully they can find an officer pretty quick,” said Lawrence police officer Molly May. “If something doesn’t feel right, it might not be right. Trust your instincts.”
As the fall semester continues, police say their goal is to keep people safe while they enjoy downtown Lawrence.
