How University of Kansas Students Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle while dealing with the chaos of college
University of Kansas students take advantage of the on-campus recreation center and its amenities to help maintain wellness in their lives.
The glamour of the college experience can include inconsistent schedules, long nights, early mornings, sickness, and mental battles as students make the transition to a new normal.
KU freshman AJ Batiste has found that the transition from high school has been tricky.
“I feel like it’s definitely been a big adjustment…in high school I’ve always played sports and stuff so it’s very easy to just be in routine at school,” says AJ Batiste, a freshman at KU, “here is a little different because you have classes at different times every day”
AJ is one of the few who tries to find consistency in the chaotic collegiate lifestyle. According to the National Institutes of Health, less than 50% of college students have a consistent workout routine, with roughly a 42% decline from the transition from high school to college.
This routine could be reflective students’ busy and chaotic schedules, juggling classes, extracurriculars, social lives, and homework. These factors don’t even include students with jobs, families, or other obligations that could prevent them from maintaining a consistent fitness routine.
The David A. Amber Student Recreation Center is one of the resources the University of Kansas’ Lawrence Campus offers to achieve this. Students have access to weights, cardio equipment, intramural sports, clubs, and other active outlets to find a healthy medium while balancing the everyday stressors of being a full-time college student.
“It’s really beneficial for me to be able to have access so close to the B-school,” says Junior Bella Molina, pointing out how the Ambler Recreation Center and Capital Federal Hall –- which houses KU’s business classes – share the same parking lot.
“I love to just come super fast after class,” Molina said.
Molina’s experience is reflective of a lot of students who regularly attend the rec. Almost none of them have a consistent schedule, and many just try to find time whenever they can. Regardless, the amenities located inside the recreation center have enough variety for everyone to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
