The KU School of Music continued its Student Recital Series Tuesday evening with standout performances featuring student pianist Ting-An Chiu.

Audience members filled Swarthout Recital Hall for a program showcasing classical masterworks, contemporary pieces, and a range of musical styles that highlighted the depth of talent within the department.

In addition to Chiu’s featured piano performance, the recital spotlighted several other student musicians, including To-Yao Hsu on flute, Kailiang Wei as a tenor, and Shujing Guo as a soprano.

Each performance offered a unique interpretation and added variety to the evening’s lineup.

The recital series gives students at all levels an opportunity to present the work they’ve put in throughout the semester, both individually and collaboratively. Chiu said performing alongside fellow musicians brings a new level of creativity to his craft.

“I still have passion for the piano solo, but I think it’s very great to have the opportunity to collaborate with other people,” he said.

Much of the series’ success is guided by Professor Yi-Yang Chen, an associate professor of piano and Juilliard graduate. Chen said his goal is to prepare students for the modern realities of the music world.

“The 21st-century pianist is not just about being a good pianist,” Chen said. “They also have to do other real-world events. I bring them to Europe where they work with orchestras, put on concerts, workshops, and attend conferences.”

The Student Recital Series continues throughout the semester and remains open to students, faculty, and members of the Lawrence community, offering ongoing opportunities to support and experience KU’s emerging musicians.
