Lawrence Farmers Market to celebrate its 50th year this Saturday

This Saturday marks a major milestone for a beloved community tradition. The Lawrence Farmers Market is celebrating 50 years of bringing fresh produce, handmade goods, and community connection to downtown Lawrence.
Since its early beginnings, the market has grown into a weekly staple for both residents and visitors. What started as a small gathering of local growers has expanded into a vibrant event that showcases a wide variety of vendors, from farmers and bakers to artisans and small business owners.
Over the past five decades, it has become a central part of the community, supporting local producers and giving shoppers a place to connect directly with the people behind their products.
Each week, vendors line the streets with fresh produce, baked goods, and handcrafted items, creating a lively and welcoming atmosphere. For many sellers, the farmers’ market is about more than just business; it’s about building relationships and serving the community.
“Our customers are dedicated to us, they appreciate what we do,” said Lori Trojan, founder of Wild Ivy and Herb, which sells handcrafted herbal products. “These vendors are not just partners in collaboration. These are friends, and we support one another.”
Vendors like Wild Blooms & Bakes bakery reflect that mission. By offering gluten-free and dairy-free options, the bakery works to ensure that more people in Lawrence can enjoy what the market has to offer. Efforts like these highlight the inclusive and community-focused spirit that has helped the market thrive for 50 years.
“There’s a huge celiac disease population in Lawrence,” said founder Kathleen Welch. “I started with one item, and by the end of the season, I offered five or six gluten-free and dairy-free items.”
Opening day begins Saturday, from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. at 8th and New Hampshire streets, and will continue weekly throughout the season. As the Lawrence Farmers Market celebrates this milestone, it continues to serve as a gathering place where the community can support local businesses and enjoy a long-standing tradition.
