Leadership changes at KU spark multiple dean searches

Following the selection of a new provost, the university is now focusing on several dean searches. These include leadership positions within the School of Education and Human Sciences and the School of Journalism and Mass Communications.

According to Stephen Mazza, dean of the KU School of Law and co-chair of the committee searching for a new journalism dean, the process is designed to be collaborative.

“Once a dean opening comes open, the provost will put together a committee made up of faculty of many types and student representatives,” Mazza said.

He added that staff also play a key role in decision-making.

“Staff are full voting members of the committee,” he said.

These committees are responsible for guiding the selection process, helping narrow down candidates and putting together the position description.

The journalism school search is now entering a new phase, with candidate presentations already underway. One of the first candidates, Scott Reinardy, shared his vision for the school during a public forum.

“I am humbled and honored to be here today to talk about my vision for the school,” Reinardy said.

Reinardy emphasized a focus on student success, including removing obstacles that may prevent students, faculty, and staff from thriving.

“We are in the position to remove barriers to allow faculty, staff, and students to succeed,” he said.

He also highlighted the importance of maintaining the school’s identity as a career-focused program.

“We’re a professional school. That’s what we do,” Reinardy said. Reinadry’s full candidate presentation is available on the Office of the Provost website.

As the search continues, university leaders say feedback from students, faculty, and staff will play a major role in shaping the final decision.

Journalism dean candidate presentations will continue through April 16, with a final decision expected later this spring. A full list of candidates and upcoming presentation details can be found here, with the next candidate set to be announced this weekend.
