Ambler Student Recreation Center set to begin renovations this fall

The University of Kansas Ambler Student Recreation Center is set to undergo renovations this year. Jason Krone, Director of Recreation Services, said the renovation is set to include three phases, with the earlier phases set to begin this month and phase three taking place in the summer. The full project is set to be completed before the fall of 2027.

The University of Kansas Rec Center utilizes basketball courts for multifunctional uses.

Renovations will address underused or cluttered spaces with the hopes of making them more accessible and convenient for students. Phase one will include renovations to the racquetball courts, a new cycling studio, and the transformation of the martial arts studio into an aerobics studio.

“We’re gonna be kind of playing Tetris,” said Senior Director of Recreation Programs, Jill Urkoski. “What can we do internally that’s not changing the building specifically?”

Phase two and three will include adding another aerobics studio and tearing down the walls enclosing the current dumbbell area for more convenient access and multifunctional use.

With KU enrollment rates reaching record highs for a third straight year, renovations will not only utilize the space more effectively, but will help improve functionality as more students come to campus.

“We want to be able to better utilize the spaces that we have within the rec center,” Krone said.
