The fourth floor of the Kansas Memorial Union is getting a major renovation this year, aiming to transform how students experience one of the most historic spaces on campus.

The Kansas Memorial Union has not been renovated since 1986, and this project will give it a fresh, new look.

Union Executive Director Jack Kredo says the updates are driven by a desire to make the Union feel more welcoming and student-focused.

“Our main mission is to create that sense of belonging and a place where you build community,” Kredo said. “I don’t think the area as it stood was an area where you as a student would want to come and hang out.”

The renovation includes a reimagined Traditions Area featuring cozy gathering spaces, moveable furniture, and designated areas for studying or watch parties. A new fireplace and an updated coffeehouse will also be added, giving students flexible spaces to meet, work, or unwind. All with the goal of making the Union feel more like home.

“That’s one of our lines of effort, to create inviting spaces,” Kredo said. “We really want it to feel like a home away from home.”

Students say they’re already looking forward to the changes, despite the construction.

“I’m really excited about the new construction and everything,” said KU student Ellie Bartsch-Bang. “It’ll be a place where we can all hang out and do homework. I have a lot of meetings, so me and my Zoom calls will probably be in the corner.”

Even with all the construction noise and “We Are Open” signs scattered across the room, Union leaders say the temporary disruption will be worth it once the project is complete. The Memorial Union remains committed to creating an environment where all students can find community.

Demolition on the fourth floor is now complete, and construction is moving into the next phase, which includes framing and drywall installation. Renovations are expected to be finished as early as May 1.
