KU Softball freshman Ella Boyer making big impact in first season

The University of Kansas softball team is off to a hot start this season—sitting at 23-9—and freshman catcher Ella Boyer has played a key role in the team’s early success.
The 5-foot-4 catcher from Spring, Texas, has already earned recognition as a two-time Big 12 Freshman of the Week, quickly establishing herself as a standout player for the Jayhawks. However, being a teammate goes beyond individual accolades for Boyer.
“I just wanted to be here and make my teammates know that I am here, whether that’s on the bench cheering or being an impact in the game or even being a catcher in the bullpen, whatever they need I am here for them,” Boyer said.
Her team-first mindset has translated into results on the field. Despite facing numerous obstacles, Boyer leads KU in several statistical categories. Still, her focus remains on helping the team reach its full potential.
“I want to put KU on the map. Sometimes we feel like we are an underdog, and that drives us. We know that this year we have the team to go far and be successful,” she said.
Boyer’s journey has not been without challenges. Living with dyslexia, she has navigated obstacles both in the classroom and on the field.
“I have definitely grown from it as a kid, but I have struggled a little communicating. I have learned to overcome it and grow with it because in school it definitely is hard,” Boyer said.
Despite these hurdles, she has continued to grow as both a player and a person. As KU continues its strong season, one thing is clear: Ella Boyer is just getting started. To stay up to date on all home games, visit the team’s official schedule here.
