Honoring Black History Month and Valentine’s Day together, the KU’s Black Student Union held an event that allowed students to discuss love and dating culture on campus.

“Especially at a PWI [Predominantly White Institution], I feel like sometimes we can feel disconnected from one another,” said Amara Ndubuisi, the freshman action team representative. “Getting to know we’re all on the same page about our feelings–whether we don’t feel seen on campus when it comes to love, or feel like there’s not as many options, as they were saying, I feel like that’s important to get all of us to talk together.”

BSU senator Valory Boyd led the meeting with a brief overview of Black History Month. The council then had the participants answer questions regarding dating in college culture. After everyone submitted an answer, the room was open to discussion.

KU Senior Isaiah Perez-Nicholson talks about dating outside of your ethnicity at a BSU meeting.

“When you’re dating outside of your culture and ethnicity, and things like that, you’re also exploring new cultures, you’re also building bridges with experiences other than your own,” said senior Isaiah Perez-Nicholson.

Each person was allowed to freely express their opinion. There were conversations about dating within and outside your race, what they expect in a partner and the overall struggles of dating in college.

“That ended up being a really interesting, and like, kind of revealing conversation about where people stand on topics–on what people think relationships are,” said sophomore Wambui Ngunjiri.
